Nineties pop legends the Spice Girls have temporarily reunited to launch the West End musical named after one of their songs “Viva Forever!” at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London where the video for their number one hit ‘Wannabe’ was filmed.
The musical’s plotline, based on the pop quintet’s hits, surrounds a young girl and her friends as they embark on a career that would turn their lives upside down. The girl is whisked into a world of fame and celebrity which sucks her into an obsessive culture that threatens her relationships with family members and her friendships.
Written by Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders, the musical demonstrates the ‘bitter reality of fame’ and, according to Mamma Mia! producer Judy Craymer who had the initial idea for the production, will “embrace all generations.”
This brief reunion is their first since 2008 for Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Mel B and Mel C. The ‘Wannabe’ hitmakers initially split in 2000. The band had number ones in 31 different countries with the song and sold over 75 million records throughout the world.
The show is scheduled to open on Dec. 11 at London’s Piccadilly Theatre.
